Have you Ever plagiarized? Do you clearly know how to AVOID plagiarism?

When I was in my undergraduate program I wanted so much to write a great paper and often the ideas that stemmed from my research Really excited me -- I would rephrase what an author stated because I wanted to sound knowledgeable to my Professor. I thought that if I cited too much I would appear dumb! So I would read the research and consciously make an effort to reword the ideas found from my research. This process in my mind created ownership of some form as I displayed these ideas in my paper. Yes I quoted but many ideas I restated without giving correct credit. In the process, I missed so much. My head was in the wrong place. I was trying to prove what I knew instead of simply learning as much as I could from these great minds that came before me.

Finally, a professor of mine in my Masters Degree, Dr. Sandra Herndon -- called me out, and in the process taught me that your ability to cite adds ethos/credibility to you as student, a researcher. I did not have the authority or knowledge and wasn’t expected to be an expert because I couldn’t be -- that’s why I was in school. After that I never hesitated to give credit for EVERY idea. It is easy to do if you just follow the guidelines -- don’t try to make your own rules or “out think” the rules! Just do exactly what they say depending upon the specific format required.

In this class we will use APA (American Psychological Association). Why, you might be wondering? The field of communication typically falls under the social sciences the social sciences share information in a uniform manner using the guidelines outlined by the APA. It is not difficult ... but it is different than MLA (Modern Language Association). Click here to discover how ... APA Owl at Purdue
